Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 230°C and grease a 900g loaf tin with oil.
  • Stir plain flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt, wholemeal flour, and sugar in a large bowl.
  • Pour in the stout and buttermilk and mix to form a wet dough.
  • Roll and fold the dough on a floured surface into a loaf shape.
  • Place dough in the tin, smooth the top with wet hands, and rest for 10 minutes.
  • Bake at 230°C for 10 minutes, then reduce to 180°C for 25 minutes.
  • Cool in the tin for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
