Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease a 5 litre ovenproof dish with butter.
  • Spread bread slices thickly with butter and cut them into triangles.
  • Arrange half the bread triangles butter-side up in the bottom of the dish.
  • Mix the dried fruit and sultanas together.
  • Sprinkle all the fruit and half the sugar over the bread layer.
  • Top with remaining bread pieces and sprinkle with the rest of the sugar.
  • Whisk the eggs and milk together and pour over the bread.
  • Let the dish stand for 15 minutes to allow the bread to soak.
  • Bake for 35 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden.
